Chicopee Woods Receives Important
Bird Designation (IBA)
|
|

Birding at Chicopee Lake |
"For the Birds" took on a new meaning around Elachee after we
received word that the Chicopee Woods had received a significant national
and international designation.
The National Audubon Society has
designated the 1200 acre tract of land an Important Bird Area (IBA).
This means that the Chicopee Woods has been recognized by a panel of bird
and habitat experts as an essential area for migrating and nesting birds. |

Wood Storks
|
The IBA Program is an international undertaking
designed to identify essential areas for birds in areas around the globe.
Many species are decreasing in number due in large part to destruction of
habitat. North American migrants, called neotropicals, are especially
vulnerable because they face challenges in both North America and their
South and Central American winter habitats. The Chicopee Woods Nature
Preserve is a textbook example of a Piedmont mixed forest and is protected
permanently by conservation easements. These factors will ensure that
future generations of birds and birders will reap the benefits from the
Chicopee for years to come. |

Banding a Titmouse
|
The designation was timely...recently spotted
from the balcony in just 45-minutes - Black-throated Blue Warbler, 1
Blackpoll Warbler, 1 Cape May Warbler, 2 American Restarts, 3 Scarlet
Tanagers, 1 Indigo Bunting, 1 Easter Wood Peewee, 2 Wood Thrush, and six
other species! Peter Gordon, birder and Director of Education at Elachee,
called it a "warbler convention!" |
